Back in 2008 we decided that the rubbish at the bottom of the E Field site needed to be shifted. This was a job we thought that the council would do for us, but there was no budget!

Having enlisted the help of the Community Payback Teams we decided that we would give it a go ourselves.

If someone had said to me in May of  2010 that this was a crazy idea then I would have disagreed with them. The first look at the area seemed to be relatively straight forward and I thought what the heck we can shift a few skips of rubbish.

Oh How wrong I was!

On closer inspection it was decided that we needed diggers and grabs and skips to get started. Well we had already established that the council had no budget for this work and we as a society without much cash in the bank could not do this. So off I went to work to pick up the telephone to Hewden Plant Hire the first in a long list of Plant Hire Companies that had no idea who I was or who the North Finchley Allotment Society were.

Eventhough the UK was at the height of an economic downturn I found that there were companies willing and able to support our aim.

So work began.

This was the start of work back in May

And so we continued, we generated rubbish from over 30 years of fly tipping along with that from our old derelict plots at the bottom of E Field.

And it just got bigger. each weekend a team would head off to clear the trees and find yet more rubbish. Each time we moved something we found more!!

All of the rubbish was taken to the car park at the top of the site where again it had to be moved from and taken away by generous doanations of lorries and time from various companies across London.

Malbay Waste in Loughton came to the rescue with a 25 yard skip and were just one of many skip companies to help out during the project:
